Good morning. Whilst we are in John 14, let us look at the next verse. “You may ask for anything in my name and I will do it” (Verse 14)
This verse confirms verse 13; it’s the two witnesses! In verse 13 Jesus says ‘I will do whatever’ and in verse 14 He seals the deal with His second ‘I will”.
Firstly it’s as though Jesus was answering a question! I say, “Lord, can I ask you for something?” Jesus say’s ‘you may ask’. Now how polite is that? Jesus doesn’t say, ‘I guess so’ or ‘oh I suppose so’, or ‘not again, give it a rest, stop pestering me’. No, He wants to hear our prayers and answer them because it honours the Father and the Son and brings glory to them.
Secondly, Jesus say’s ‘for anything’. Now, we have covered this, but let’s remind ourselves that if the anything is selfish, dangerous, avaricious, or downright wrong and doesn’t bring glory to God but dishonours His name, then don’t expect an answer. When you get to know His names and more so, who and what those names represent, you will be careful to honour that name! Remember the Lord’s Prayer? ‘Hallowed be your name”
Thirdly, when we do get it right and pray in His name He will do it! It requires faith to pray in His name, and faith pleases God and He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. It takes belief in God to pray in His name, God blesses our affirmation of who He is. And He will do it for it honours His name and He is blessed through our being blessed, He is rewarded when we are rewarded, He bears fruit when we are fruitful through prayer!
The Lord loves us and knows we fumble it at times, so Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth and that very much includes how to pray the ‘anything in His name’. So go pray.
