I want to spend one more day on Jehovah Jireh. God has provided so much for us in Christ that it is hard to get ones head around it at times! I want us to notice something very important that a quick glance at this passage may cause us to miss! In 22v6 we read ‘Abraham placed the wood for the burnt offering on Isaac’s shoulders, while he himself carried the knife and fire.’ And verse 9, ‘Abraham placed Isaac on the wood.’ We forget that, not only was Abraham going to sacrifice his son, he was going to burn him up completely too!
The WOOD = the cross, the KNIFE= the sacrifice, the FIRE = God’s all consuming wrath. Jesus died on the cross not only to shed His blood for the remission [forgiveness] of our sins, but He absorbed the full fury and wrath of God also! The theological term is propitiation. Jesus was like a force field that absorbed everything God should have flung at us! All the curses, all the judgements, all the condemnations, all the plagues of sin’s consequences, the whole of God’s fiery hot and all consuming wrath, Jesus absorbed and blotted out the lot!
So why, you may ask is God going to pour out His fury on the unsaved who have died and those who go though the tribulation period? What we have to remember is that all of the judgements in Revelation 6-19, [the 7 seals, the 7 trumpets, and the 7 bowls] all these and lots more stuff were flung upon Jesus whilst He hung on the cross! He may have soaked them up, but His propitiation is only applicable to those who identify with Christ, those who believe in Him and receive Him [John 1:12] those who appropriate all that Jesus did into themselves by faith through the bowing of the heart and the knees to Christ and inviting Him in to their lives. Those who do are FREED completely from the consequenses of sin, and therefore they escape the wrath to come. For the Christ rejecters, Jesus is only temporarily holding back the full wrath of God as a dam holds back the full force of water. The dam will be removed I believe at the rapture of the Church, then all these judgements will begin to be let loose on earth!
What can we do! FIRSTLY, we must daily thank and praise God for our Lord Jesus who loves us and has freed us from our sins by shedding His blood for us. [Revelation 1v5] and who has delivered us from the wrath to come. SECONDLY, we perhaps need to pray a bit harder and more seriously for our loved ones who don’t know Christ and who will have to face His wrath if they don’t!
Gracious God, our Father and Creator. You are Jehovah Jireh the one who provides for us in that place. I thank you that you provided so much for us at the place of the cross. Just as Isaac carried the wood, so Jesus willingly carried the cross knowing what was to come. And just as Abraham lay Isaac on the wood, so too did you O God allow your beloved Son to be laid upon that cruel cross. And though you stayed Abraham’s hand, you did not stay yours, and though Abraham never burnt up his son as an offering for the appeasement of your wrath, yet you let Jesus the Christ have it all! All the horrors of sin and cursings and judgement. God in heaven I am so grateful, for I nor anyone else could carry such wrath. Please, O our God, deliver those we love and know but do not yet know Christ as Lord, from the wrath to come in Jesus’ name and for His sake. Amen.
