DEALING WITH A DISAPPOINTMENT
Ecclesiastes 11:4 ‘If you wait for perfect conditions you will never get anything done’.
You should see my back garden, especially my vegetable plot! It has never been this bad in all my 12 years living here. I am so disappointed, but I guess I have only myself to blame; you see, I kept waiting for the sun to shine, and have ideal conditions to get in the garden so I could tend and weed it! Well as you know, the conditions in the UK have been far from ideal. The problem for me I guess is that when the weather has been good, I have had to catch up on other folk’s gardens [it’s my job!] and so when I got home I was too pooped to keep on top of my own! But quite honestly, I should’ve made more effort.
Don’t get me wrong, I am still getting some good crops, but I have lost a lot to rot, slugs and windy wet conditions. What can I do? Well, all I can do now is try to salvage what I have then wait for the winter to kill off undesirable pests and start from basics again and re-plan my whole garden in case this awful pattern of rotten summer’s continues! I will have to adapt to the change rather than keep doing what’s worked for me previously!
I guess I am a bit like this spiritually! I wait till I feel like praying, or I am not so tired, or I wait till there’s a crisis. But the wise Solomon reminds us it is futile to wait till the conditions are perfect, because they never really are! And whilst we’re waiting for everything to be ideal, we’re getting nothing done. So, what next? Well re my garden, I will do what I can and I wont do what I can’t! Spiritually, I guess I need to go back to basics and realise the perfect pray day and bible study day don’t exist and just make the most of every opportunity that comes and not waste a moment! I will have to re-plan my devotional time with the Lord and adapt to the changes I am facing spiritually! Yes, that’s what I’ll do.
PRAYER Gracious Father God, help me I pray to make the most of my present situations. This is the day you have made! Yesterday’s gone forever and tomorrow never comes because when it does it’s today again! Help me to salvage what I can of my garden, and help me to salvage my walk with you. Thank you Lord amen.
