Yet how quickly they forgot what he had done!
They wouldn’t wait for his counsel!
In the wilderness their desires ran wild,
testing God’s patience in that dry wasteland.
So he gave them what they asked for,
but he sent leanness in their souls’.
Ever been there? You’ve forgot God’s promises and blessings and you become totally self-centred, discontent and dissatisfied with your lot in life! And so, in your prayers you tell God you want a better job even though the one you now have is the one you prayed for and God gave you! I’ve been there!
Or, you tell God you want out of your marriage because your spouse is no longer the one you want even though they’re the one you prayed for and the one God gave you!
Or maybe you want more money because you’re not satisfied with what you have even though you can manage on it! Or perhaps a big promotion that will get you more prestige, power and a higher profile, but you are already stressed to the max and you hardly have time now for your spouse and kids!
Or maybe you desire another man’s wife or another wife’s husband? You just want sex with them because you no longer desire your spouse?
God calls it COVETOUSNESS and it’s the tenth commandment, and though it is last it is by no means least! God hates it because we demand what is not ours to have and what God knows is going to be bad for us if He were to give it. We get so focused on what we want that we forget what God wants. He wants to be the central focus of our lives not our petty desires! He wants us to be content, satisfied and happy and when He’s the first in our lives we experience this and much more! We come under His abundant blessings which He has stored up for us. They will give us
A deeper and lasting sense of satisfaction and well-being!
- They’ll enable us to focus upon and equip us to fulfil our God given purpose and to complete our mission in life!
- God will give us so much that we’ll have more than enough! Our self-centredness will dissolve and we’ll begin to bless those whom we may have started to despise and curse in our hearts.
Tough stuff isn’t it? But God’s love is very tough.
PRAYER I think it would be a good idea to do what I have done this morning! Take some bread and red juice and get before God and ask Him in which areas I am covetous and then get it sorted and under the cross, bury it and rise up with a different heart and attitude. You owe it to God, yourself, family and I guess the world.
