A THOROUGH INVESTIGATION
Luke 2:16 ‘So they went with haste and by searching found Mary and Joseph and the baby lying in a manger’. See also verses11-12 ‘For to you is born this day in the town of David a Saviour, Who is Christ (the Messiah) the Lord! And this will be a sign for you [by which you will recognize Him]: you will find [after searching] a Baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.
Note how specific the angels were about the details, but they didn’t tell the shepherds exactly where to look though the Angels must’ve known! The search is part of the adventure and joy of discovery! They had enough clues to be able to search out and find the baby! The angels said ‘you will find him by searching!’ That’s how we discover more about Jesus! We have to search by daily reading and meditating on the scriptures. God will not hand it all to us on a plate or spoon feed us, though many I guess would like it that way. There are plenty of clues all through the Bible about God and life and how to live it! We just need to search and perhaps dig deeper than we usually do! Remember the best veins of gold are deep down in the mines! You’ll only get small nuggets when you pan and skim over the surface!
Note the first clue! Born in David’s town! Wow they were so close; they were in the vicinity [verse 8]! They knew David’s town was Bethlehem so they didn’t have far to go! That’s how close Jesus is away from us! For me, it’s an early morning alarm call, a cuppa and my bible and journal! All they had to do was go into Bethlehem and find him. They would know he wasn’t in a house or inn because of the manger [an animal trough] so they were looking for out buildings with light and noises. They would go down this road and down that lane, then may be up a dead end then they would have to go back. But they didn’t give up and were rewarded for their efforts. Look what Hebrews 11:6 say’s ‘God is the rewarder of those who earnestly and diligently seek Him out’.
Reading the Bible and searching for the Father, the son and the Holy Spirit is not unlike this! You have to take different routes, look at things from different perspectives, and note the different shades and meanings of words or stories etc! Like a diamond has different facets and aspects, so too does the Bible! That’s what bible meditation is! It’s like the cow chewing the cud, it chews and chews till every bit of nourishment is removed and inwardly appropriated! So, this Christmastime let us go out of our way, make detours and search out Jesus Christ like never before. And if you hit a dead end, then go back and check out another route. The Holy Spirit is our mentor and guide. Ask Him and He’ll help you.
PRAYER Heavenly Father God. Thank you for this time of year when we remember the 1st advent of Christ. Thank you that you are the rewarder of those who earnestly and diligently seek you. Help me to be one of those people this Christmastime. Holy Spirit, my Counsellor, mentor, advisor and guide, help me on this journey I pray as I seek to find more and more of Jesus. Amen
