December 30th 2016 [day 30]
We continue looking at advents and how scripture was fulfilled in the first advent and if any have been fulfilled prior to 2nd advent?
The Messiah would come from the tribe of Judah
Bible prophecy: Genesis 49:10
Prophecy written: As early as 1400 BC
Prophecy fulfilled: Fulfilled Luke 3:23-34 and Matthew 1:1-16.
Genesis 49:10 NIV
The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs and the obedience of the nations is his.
In Genesis 49:10, Jacob is blessing his 12 sons. This blessing was also a prophecy. Jacob told his son Judah that his descendants would be rulers and that one of his descendants will be an ultimate ruler. According to the NIV translation: “The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs and the obedience of the nations is his.” Christians acknowledge that this is a reference to Jesus Christ, whose kingdom will have no end. Jesus was born about 2000 years after Jacob died. Jesus’ ancestry is traced back to Jacob’s son, Judah, in Luke 3:23-34 and in Matthew 1:1-16. Today, there are some estimates that claim that there are as many as 2 billion Christians worldwide who follow the teachings of Jesus, many nations and peoples follow and obey Him as this scripture said they would and not just Jews!
The Messiah would be a descendant of King David
Jeremiah 23:5 NIV
“The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land.
Bible prophecy: Jeremiah 23:5 Prophecy written: Sometime between 626-586 BC
Prophecy fulfilled: By the birth of Jesus about 2000 years ago
In Jeremiah 23:5, as well as in other Bible prophecies, we are told that the Messiah would be a descendant of King David. The New Testament books of Matthew and Luke trace back Jesus’ genealogy to King David. (Some scholars believe that the genealogy in Matthew is Jesus’ legal line, through his adoptive father, Joseph, and that the genealogy in Luke is Jesus’ bloodline through Mary).
A Jewish homeland had to be reestablished in the Middle East
Geopolitically, the central focus of end-time events is Jerusalem and its environs, what many people refer to as the Holy Land. Luke 21 is a parallel chapter to Matthew 24. Notice Luke’s account of Christ’s long prophecy that answered the disciples’ questions: “Teacher, . . . when will these things be? And what sign will there be when these things are about to take place?” [Luke 21:7] In response, Jesus showed that Jerusalem would be the central focus of the political and military upheavals that would immediately precede His return: “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near . . . For these are the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled” ( Luke 21:20-22). [Full preterists and partial preterists would not agree with this]! Anyone living a century ago would have found these words nearly impossible to comprehend. Jerusalem in ancient times had been fought over countless times, but for four centuries from 1517 the city had been at peace within the boundaries of the Ottoman Empire. Jews lived there as a minority under Turkish rule. But this was going to change dramatically during the course of the 20th century. It had to change for the fulfillment of Bible prophecy to take place
From AD 70, Israel was a barren wasteland and definitely not a nation in itself. Then in 1948 the Arab Palestinian economy collapsed and 250,000 Palestinian Arabs fled or were expelled. On 14 May 1948, the day before the expiration of the British Mandate, David Ben-Gurion, the head of the Jewish Agency, declared “the establishment of a Jewish state in Eretz-Israel, to be known as the State of Israel”. So for me, [at least] on that day I believe prophetic end-time scripture was fulfilled. Interestingly from May 1948 to May 2018 is 70 years! 70 is a biblical time of judgement followed by emancipation, release and freedom [Babylonian captivity!] Worth pondering about methinks! Also another interesting thought worth pondering is that between June 5th-10th 1967 Israeli soldiers retook the capital Jerusalem! In the Bible 50 years is the year of jubilee [emancipation, release and freedom!] So, next June is a jubilee of 50 years from the 6 day war and reestablishing Jerusalem as the Jewish capital! Does this have end-time significance? I don’t know? Maybe! Just observe world events as they unfold in 2017 and 2018, then watch and pray about what unfolds, and be sure you are ready for whatever the Lord does!
