Ok, so I need to ask and try to answer 2 questions!
- WHY WOULD A GOD OF LOVE POUR OUT HIS WRATH UPON THE WORLD/PEOPLE HE LOVES?
- WHY WOULD A GROWING SECTOR OF GOD’S CHURCH WANT TO ERASE THIS DOCTRINE FROM SCRIPTURE AND TEACH THAT THE WORLD IS GOING TO GET BETTER AND NOT WORSE BEFORE CHRIST RETURNS.
Question 1. There are many who teach that the tribulation period is not the time of God’s wrath! Well, the tribulation period is obviously portrayed in Revelation 6-19. It is the time of Jacob’s trouble, the 7 years Jacob [Israel owes God!] The word wrath appears 13 times in the book of Revelation. 6:16, 6:17, 11:18, 12:12, 14:8, 14:10, 14:19 15:1, 15:7, 16:1, 16:19, 18:3, 19:15. Of these 13 verses, 10 refer to the wrath of God the 3 in RED are referring to the devil and Babylon the whore respectively! So in only 13 chapters, the word wrath of God or the wrath of the Lamb or His wrath, appears in 10 out of those 13 chapters! I think that’s pretty telling!
I checked the word ‘wrath’ in Vines expository dictionary New testament words and it is translated ‘wrath’ or ‘fierceness’. This is red hot divine indignation! Something is happening to make a God who ‘is love’ pour out terrible judgement upon those he loves but who have rejected Him and His Messiah [His way of salvation from the wrath to come!] And in a nutshell this is the reason!! Jesus said:
So, what was it like in the days of Noah? The people were eating, drinking, marrying! Does that really deserve God’s wrath through the flood or the tribulation to come? Well, let’s put in a bit of context shall we? Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive and remain with man forever, because he is indeed flesh [sinful, corrupt—given over to sensual appetites] Genesis 6:3 & The Lord saw that the wickedness (depravity) of man was great on the earth, and that every imagination or intent of the thoughts of his heart were only evil continually. The Lord regretted that He had made mankind on the earth, and He was [deeply] grieved in His heart. 6:5. And: The [population of the] earth was corrupt [absolutely depraved—spiritually and morally putrid] in God’s sight, and the land was filled with violence [desecration, infringement, outrage, assault, and lust for power]. God looked on the earth and saw how debased and degenerate it was, for all humanity had corrupted their way on the earth and lost their true direction. 6:11-12. So, in context going about their daily lives wasn’t the problem! It was their Godless, foul, soul-ish, wicked, ofttimes evil, selfish and self-centred ways that brought God’s fierce wrath and indignation down upon them. They had rejected Him [the God and Father of all truth] for a lie from the father of lies [the devil].
So, do the math! Is it any different today? No, in fact it is worse. There are more people on the earth now [over 7 billion!] And with internet access, TV etc, the minds of much of humankind can be and are filled with foul imaginations. After all, satan is the prince of the powers of the air! That includes MUSIC, TV, INTERNET AIR WAVES ETC. He doesn’t have total power over this, but those who allow him access into their lives have chosen to invite him and his foul hordes in to have ‘mind access’ whether they know it or not or whether they believe it or not! Yet still I hear people say, ‘is God that angry?’ ‘Really?’ And ‘did mankind deserve what they got then and does mankind deserve what it seems they have got coming?’ All I can do is point you to God’s revealed word. It is up to you to believe it or not! But there is one awesome thing too about the Ark narrative! There was an open door! A way of escaping the wrath to come. There was room enough in the Ark for everyone if they chose to believe through faith! Today there’s an open door in heaven still! After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! [Revelation 12:1] The invite is still there. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved [Acts 16:31]
However, we read in the narrative of Genesis that the door was closed by God and then it was too late for those who chose to scoff, ridicule and reject God. The same is true now. In the parable of the 10 virgins 5 were locked out because they didn’t take this teaching seriously! So, how about you? The door is still open, but it won’t be indefinitely! Which side of the door will you be on?
We’ll look at question 2 next time.
